Engagement Ring Settings

There are a huge variety of engagement ring settings but some of the most popular include prongs, bezel, bar, pave, channel, gypsy and flat top settings.

In this section of the site we look at the different settings and shapes of the ring.

Prongs

Easily the most popular kind of setting it was Tiffany’s revolutionary six-pronged design setting that was the impetus behind the growing popularity of diamond engagement rings There are dozens of different styles but they are all designed to show off the full glory of the stone.

This kind of setting can be make the stone very secure however, when looking at prong settings, make sure that there aren’t too many. The more prongs there are in the setting the more easily they can overpower the stone.

Bezel

Unlike prongs which elevate the stone a bezel setting surrounds the stone which can help protect the gem as well as camouflaging any defects in the piece.

Most bezels are of course made from yellow gold which can sometimes cause a white stone to appear slightly dull though it has the opposite effect from coloured gems such as rubies.

Bar

A very modern and stylish setting used for rings with multiple stones. Each stone is held between two bars in a circular band.

Channel

Perhaps more commonly used for wedding bands channel engagement ring settings holds multiple stones in a lipped channel. Unlike bar settings there is nothing between each stone and it is usual for the stones to form a continuous circle around the ring.

Pave

This is a lovely setting that is most often found on very expensive rings. The reason for this is that the Pave setting holds many small stones together in a cluster which almost seems to be floating on air. Usually no metal whatsoever can be seen and the small stones take on the appearance of one huge gem.

Gypsy

No idea of how the name for this setting came about but in this style the stone is set snugly inside a hollow in the rings band.

Flat Top

Does pretty much what it says on the tin. The stone is positioned in the hollow of a flat piece of metal and held in place by tiny metal beads.
