Gemstone Engagement Rings

Gemstone engagement rings featuring stones such as diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires are all incredibly popular and other precious gems such as opals, pearls and melanite are also beautiful.

Of course it is the gem that is the main focus of the ring as well as being the most expensive component of the piece.

Obviously then it is important to pick the right gem and here we will look at a few tips on selecting the best possible stone.

Of course most of us won't be experts at picking out the flaws or imperfections of gems but there are some things that we can look at and even the least knowledgable of us will be able to see differences between stones.

No matter which gem you have picked for your ring it is always advisable to have a look at the stone away from its mount. The reason for this is that sometimes imperfections in the stone can be concealed by the mounting.

Remember that if the stone has been handled to ask for it to be cleaned. Fingers leave oily deposits on gems and the stone needs to be cleaned for you to see it at its brilliant best.

It is very important with all engagement rings that the stone is examined using a jewellers loupe,.

A loupe is a magnifying glass style tool used by jewellers to look into the depths of the stone and any reputable jeweller should be only too pleased to allow his customers the use of one.

Again, it is worth saying that most of us aren't experts and nor should we pretend to be. But using a loupe even the most inexperienced of us should be able to see any nicks or scratches in the stone.

A good tip when using a loupe is to view the stone from the side, looking down at the top of the stone won't allow you to see the inside of the gem.

On this site we will look at all the different gems and variations of gemstone engagement rings and you will also be able to find tips on how to select the best gem for you.
